The Mission Mountain School existed from 2001 to 2008. The target group was teenage girls suffering from minor problems. The employees “treated” the girls with forced labor, isolation and manipulation.

A school where the teenagers have no access to television, phone conversations with their families and friends back home and where they are subjected to marathon therapy sessions against their will is hard.
Friends of students even create petitions to have them back.
It is safe to say that Monarch School is not a fun place to be as a teenager.

The first thing students experience when they arrive at the boarding school is that they have to take all their clothes off. Their days are filled with forced labor and little treatment.
A former student states on Facebook:
I was on complete social isolation for two months if it helps at all. I was not able to talk to anybody except for the therapist. The punishment if I broke this rule? NO FOOD. I fuckin hate MA for a lot of reasons, mainly it wasn’t a rehab, it is a behavioral modification facility. One AA meeting a week and fucking retarded Todd is not going to keep anyone sober. Every single person I know who went here either relapsed, killed themselves, or have dissapeared off the face of the earth. I used heroin for 4 months after MA before I checked myself in to a real rehab. I lived with one good friend of mine from MA after we both relapsed in another rehab, and I sponsor another MA relapser from my time. Therapeudic boarding schools are useless as long as they force people to do anything. You have to want to get sober and I don’t think that FORCED PHYSICAL LABOR is the way to make this happen, and yes I am saying that I was forced to do physical labor. I even have pictures of it if you would like to see. I am thinking about just driving up there in the middle of the night with a truck and helping those kids escape. They do not deserve to be treated like they are and there many better places for them besides MA

New Horizons Youth Ranch is one of “We fix everything” ranches in Montana. However there is lack of qualified employees, education is not of a modern standard. The Students end up being behind their old classmates at home.
A parent states:
In our situation, despite many phone calls, he never received any treatment from a qualified counsellor or a doctor. Would it have made a difference? Who knows? The appointments were never made. The promised weekly phone calls rarely came, and it was very stressful. To be fair, the ranch was undergoing much change while D was there. They were moving, there was family emergencies, new staff coming on board. and others leaving. School never started until mid October that year. We discovered too late that D had not completed his credits. There were no consequences and no returned phone calls.

Once again we find that it is time to mention a school where the reason for its placement in this blog is not that the teachers are abusive or the teenagers are withheld from activities which is a rite of passage towards adulthood.
No, this school is listed because some outsiders – simple to say – dimwits – killed many students just because they believe that the education provided is too western.
Each and every one of the students wanted to learn how to farm the land their families have lived on for generations. Why shouldn’t they do this and learn how to write and calculate in the process?
There is no explanation for this tragedy. Only a sick mind like Abubakar Shekau can try making some sense of it but he clearly belongs in a room with soft walls wearing a strait jacket.
This school is not a fun place to attend as a teenager when the world consist of evil and sick minded people like the followers of Boko Haram.

Spring Creek Lodge was one of the largest programs in the now almost closed WWASP chain of behavior modification boarding schools. Located in an isolated part of Montana they were the largest employer in the area. The local police was partly financed by the school and some claims that the police closed their eyes on some of the abusive methods former students speak about.
Today the campus is used to train children of the native population. Hopefully they have made a memorial for the many teenagers who lost years of their lives locked down living in a prison without having been charged and convicted in court with legal defense as normal citizens get. Last and not least a memorial for Karlye Newman who ended her life at the school.

Turning Winds is marketed for a school for struggling teens. Having researched the history of the school it seems that the owners had to leave Idaho for Montana when they became center of a police investigation.

Focal Point Academy located in Mesquite in Nevada where All of Me Child Care of Development is located now functioned as a therapeutic boarding school. However it was not licensed properly and lack of supervision endangered the students due to the actions of other students. A lawsuit was started some years ago.
It is clear that such a place only will be safe if the employees do their job properly. It is also clear that there is a reason for having a licensing system.

In 2007 Mr. Robinson had to move out of California because the authorities had the nerves to have laws regarding the nature of therapeutic boarding schools. It posed a problem for the man because Mexico first closed Casa by the Sea (Number 4 on this blog) and now Bell Academy (number 56 on this blog).
Where could he go? He found a deserted motel in the middle of Death Valley. Here he established Horizon Academy. For a number of years the school existed quietly until the former students from all his previous business created awareness websites on the internet exposing this private prison. At the same time the school was involved in a water dispute in this dry area and he ended with moving the students to Utah where the business closed years later but that is another story.
It could not have been fun attending this boarding school located in the middle of the desert.

Sky View Academy was one of the former WWASP facilities. It existed only for about 2 years before it lost its license due to a fight between several students caused by lack of supervision and care from the employees.

Today it is called “Bjerketun ungdomspsykiatriske behandlingshjem” and the treatment methods are therapy but it wasn’t always so. In 1960 the media published a number of articles based on the testimony of a counselor who had worked there. Among the issues mentioned were use of isolation rooms, corporal punishment and girls being forced to undress in front of male employees.
The media coverage resulted in a closure of the boarding school. The so-called “protection school for girls” was a prison for young girls where the girls were subjected to a treatment which you normally would expect to see in bad 1970′s sex-movies.

Shortridge Academy was founded by a former student from CEDU who wanted to re-create the same kind of enclosed boarding school he went to.
A couple of years a documentary about CEDU and the long-term emotional damages this program inflicted on its former students was put on. As result enrollment at the CEDU-clone schools dropped. A parent to a student at Shortridge Academy writes:
This school was an utter disapointment. Enrollment has fallen to the point where there are now only about 20 kids at the school, and there is an absolute lack of resources and staff to accomplish what they represent they will do for the kids. The staff is augmented by half trained college students. My child arrived at this school from a wilderness school, and he was an absolute joy. Now, after almost a year he has regressed to being disobedient and defiant. All through this time I was told to just wait, that my child could be helped, and that my child was the perfect student. After about $100k I’ve come to recognize that none of this is true. There has not been any perceptible improvement in behavior or attitude. I feel as though I’ve been defrauded. I don’t know if other theraputic boarding schools have better results, but this one failed in every respect for me and my child. Sorry. Just my honest opinion.

Tierra Blanca Ranch was marketed as a working ranch for at-risk teenagers. The parents who sent their sons to this ranch would properly not imagine that their boys would end up in shackles but that is the case.
From the very start there was problems with licesing. A young man died while attending the ranch because he feel of a car. There was no seatbelts for his position.
In the end the authorities had to issue an Amber Alert to find the last boys.
